During 2001 F40 operations were winding down not only on the San Joaquin but across the entire Amtrak system. Seen at Modesto on May 5th of that year, the 1977-built No. 231 now displays the Operation Lifesaver message for it's owner. No. 231, an F40PHR, made its final run on the San Joaquin in October of 2001. The unit was obtained by a private party and is now under restoration at the Brooklyn Roundhouse in Portland, Oregon.
